Use the Sale app

You can use the Sale app for a basic sale. Just enter the amount of the sale and run the customer's card. Accepted methods include swipe, chip, and contactless payments.

Take a swipe payment

You can take a swipe payment card in the Sale app when making a payment. However, if a customer has an EMV card (a smart card with chip), we recommend inserting the card to avoid EMV-related chargebacks that can occur when customers don't use the chip feature.

  1. On your Clover device, open the Sale app.

  2. Enter the sale amount, and then tap Charge.

  3. If you’ve enabled prompting for invoice numbers (or your custom identifier), enter an identification number, and then tap Continue.

  4. Swipe the payment card. (For Station Duo, have the customer swipe the card on the Mini terminal facing them.)

  5. Ask the customer to enter their PIN or sign as necessary.

  6. Select how customers will receive their receipt, or tap Void Transaction to void the payment.

  7. Tap Done.

Take an EMV chip card payment

  1. On your Clover device, open the Sale app.

  2. Enter the sale amount, then tap Charge.

  3. If you’ve enabled prompting for invoice numbers (or your custom identifier), enter an identification number, then tap Continue.

  4. Insert the card.

  5. Ask the customer to enter their PIN or sign as necessary. To skip entering a PIN, tap SKIP.

  6. Select how the customer will receive their receipt, or tap Void Transaction or Reject Signature to void the payment.

  7. Tap Done.

Take a contactless payment

  1. On your Clover device, open the Sale app.

  2. Enter the sale amount, then tap Charge.

  3. If you’ve enabled prompting for invoice numbers (or your custom identifier), enter an identification number, then tap Continue.

  4. Hold the card or phone over the EMV contactless logo.

  5. Ask the customer to sign or enter PIN as necessary.

  6. If the customer signed, tap Verify to accept their signature.

  7. Select how customers will receive their receipt, or tap Void Transaction to void the payment.

  8. Tap Done.

Allow customer-facing payments 

Allow customers to use a Mini or Flex to checkout without any merchant intervention. This means that customers can select the tip and pay with their card straight from the Clover device, without having help from an employee. 

  1. Enable customer-facing payments in the Setup app of your Clover device. 

    • Open the Setup app

    • Select Payments.

    • Select Enable Secure Payment Flow Mode

    • Select Save. 

  2. In the Sale app, enter the amount and select Charge. 

  3. Hand the device to the customer. 

  4. The customer will:

    • Select the tip

    • Insert, tap or swipe their card 

  5. Once the customer is done, they will hand the device back. 

If there are any issues detected during checkout or the device detects a duplicate payment, an error will be shown to the customer instructing them to return the device to an employee.
